We had our 1st talk in our Philippines Mangaldan 2nd Branch last week. For about 5-6 weeks, we have been studying Tagalog language with Brother Curtis Cannon with the MTC Online Language Program for Senior Couples. We have learned a few phrases we can read on paper, (not remembering very much to speak ) So here are a few Tagalog phrases,,, that we "read" along with other parts of our talks.
Naniniwala po ako kay Jesu Cristo
(I believe in Jesus Christ).
Alam ko po na totoo propeta si Thomas S. Monson
(I know Thomas S. Monson is a true Prophet)
Alam ko po na totoo propeta si Joseph Smith at alam ko po ang totoo Aklat ni Mormon.
(I know Joseph Smith is a true Prophet and I know the Book of Mormon is true.
Nagpappasalamat po ako sa pamilya.
(I am thankful for my family)
Sa pangalan ni Jesu Cristo, amen
(In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
Sister Roberts had a fun birthday along with Elder Roberts Happy Father's Day !
We never received so many congratulatory comments ever. Here is an interesting pic, of Elder Roberts- 68 and of his Dad, Frank- at 57. Frank died that year.
Here in the Philippines, if it is before your birthday, they say Advance Happy Birthday! If late - Happy Belated Birthday! You are suppose to wear red on your birthday. Elder Roberts gave the scarf.
We had a party with the Senior Couples, I made the cake (my oven goes to 500 degrees, I open the door to cool down, open the door etc, 15 min - it is done! The store offered only 1 cake mix. I put Andes Mints on top and melted, for a frosting. We met the new Elder and Sister Hadlock from Spanish Fork, Utah. She is from Denmark and he from the States. They were all overwhelmed being there (like we were 3 months ago !)
We sang karioke and the Mission Pres. 1st Counselor - Pres. and Sister Mortensen from AZ sang a love song .They live in this resort - one of the very nicest places we have seen here.
Later, Elder Roberts took Sister Roberts out to a nice restaurant. Our T-Bone steaks were almost 1/4" thick, swimming with thick brown gravy that tasted a bit fishy , good vegetables and of course all the rice you can eat.
When we go shopping, it is one of the nicest stores and mall we have seen. Robinson's Mall. We don't think they need them, but here are guards at the front door - but they don't frisk us as Sr. Missionaries. I think the lady guard at the door is a Church member.
There is plenty of Jeepney parking, that are of course guarded,,,
We had the awesome experience to hear talks from Elder Larry J. EchoHawk from the 1st Council of 70's, also his wife spoke. It was for a Mission Tour. He told us a message from our Prophet, President Thomas S. Monson that he loves us and the Lord will be with us in every good thing that we do. As we should be quiet in the Temple, he told us - let's make this room like a Temple. No words with each other - only quiet loving and agreeing looks with our eyes. D&C 100:5 Speak the thoughts that I shall put in your hearts and you shall not be confounded before men.
Take the April 2014 Conference Ensign or Liahona and mark it up with notes that God wants you to remember and do and improve. That is what Elder Eyring had done when El. EchoHawk talked with him 2 weeks after Conference - It was all marked up ! If an Apostle has the time to do it, so do we!
Be exactly Obedient. Only compare yourself to a better yourself - then improve yourself. Pray out loud - on your knees. There is a reason the Lord put you here in this place. Find your Promises from God in the Scriptures - and write them in your Journal. Remember you served as a Missionary during the beginning of Pres. Monson's Hastening the Work !
Elder EchoHawk looking straight on and all of us (Men behind) Sis EchoHawk in green
Other Missionaries included "The Other young Sister Roberts.. from Twin Falls Idaho
and from Las Vegas.
A Senior Couple heard a man driving by - the man noticing he looked American said Hey Joe ! (GI Joe !) Quick response Elder Bell said Hey Phil ! (Philippino !)
We saw our first horribly BIG SPIDER ! ! Look at it next to the cleanser can. Elder Roberts got it with a broom, then when sweeping it outside, it lost a leg,,, but the "leg" ran away -- it was a baby Gecko on the spider we think awwwk ! So there you share with us-- Sister Roberts Brother --who is Elder Mike Martin serving in the Guam Mission now with Terry his wife... Look at their Mission blog, and spider pic too, at micronesianmission@blogspot.com
We love the people we visit and serve and encourage to be reativated, just like Alma the Younger and his sons and Amulek taught the people Alma 31: 34-35 O Lord, wilt thou grant unto us that we may have success in bring them again unto thee in Christ. Behold, O Lord, their souls are precious.
We love you all, may we all improve and be faithful to our covenants we made at baptism, that we would keep all God's commandments and serve him to the end,,,, just like Moroni did, when he was just a Church Membership of ONE all by himself, alone, he was faithful and endured to the end.
Love,
Elder Dennis and Sister Beth Ann Roberts
Urdaneta Philippines Mission
